The question "What is justice?" can be represented by the equation "x = justice". Presupposing that justice actually exists, man can surmise that it is something fixed, something transcendent, and something other than a utilitarian and arbitrary construct for the collective well-being of a society. From there, men can reason and dialog towards a viable working definition that is truthful, rational and (hopefully) agreeable.
So "x = justice"... but what is "x"? Man seems to know that it is, but in and of himself, he cannot seem to figure out what it is.
I agree 100% I think that all of man kind believes that justice exist but we just don't know what it is. I think that if you are a christian then the answer is easy, God is just, therefore any act he tells you to do is a just act. It's when you are a non believer that you will never be able to figure out what justice is because there is no one just outside of God.
ReplyDeleteI just want to state that I agree with Josh and Gary 100%. However I want to bring up, that God's since of justice is not so simple. For someone who has not been raised to believe in God, God being a just god is tricky to believe. God has some moments were justice, doesn't seem so just. Especially in Old Testament accounts. Take Abraham and Isaac, for an example. God told Abraham to sacrifice his only child, Isaac, and by Abraham following through with God's command, he was acting justly. But does that seem like a just God would command such a thing? I know that the Lord provided for Abraham and Isaac lived, but still the justice behind that is hard to explain, is it not? What about a God who is suppose to love all but orders the Israelites to slaughter the inhabitants of the Promised Land?
ReplyDeleteOnce again, I want to restate that I agree with Josh and you, but I also wanted to say that God's justice is not such an easy concept to wrap one's mind around.
I agree with you that we know what justice is but we cannot seem to figure it out for one reason: as humans, people are selfish and ultimately search ways to advance themselves. I mean in a world where everything is measured by how much wealth someone possesses. People seem to look down on the poor and humble and say that they have not done anything in their life. I really thought it was interesting that to truly search the meaning of justice, people have to strip themselves from everything else in a way that justice takes over their life.
